Vampire's Key Chapter Two Like the Great Work of an alchemist, the yellow glow from street lights transmuted the wet pavement from black to gold. Around her, pedestrians wove past in all directions, their umbrellas open, occasionally bumping into one another like bumper cars jostling for prime position. The rain had eased, its fiery volley having pounded London and threatened to crack the fragile skin of pavement. Katie gazed at the path of reflected gold until it faded into the dark gloom of the alley.
